Samburu National Reserve

North of Mount Kenya, Samburu feels like another world. Dry, wide open, and raw—but alive. Elephants linger at the river, crocodiles drift by, and you might spot a cheetah grabbing a quick bite to eat. It’s quieter here. Wilder. You’ll meet the Samburu people too—proud, warm, deeply connected to this land. It’s not just a place to see animals but to feel the space in the silence to absorb the stories.

STORY OF THE RESERVE.

Samburu wasn’t always its own reserve. It started out as part of a larger protected area back in 1948, but it didn’t take long for people to realize this place had a character all its own. In the early ’60s, a ranger named Rodney Elliott pushed for the land north of the Ewaso Ng’iro River to be recognized as something separate, something special. And in 1962, it was. A year later, local leadership took over, and to this day, it’s the Samburu people, known for their friendliness and warmth, who help protect and preserve it. There’s also a bit of history here that might surprise you—this is one of the places where George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the lioness before releasing her into the wild. The wildness is still here. So is the sense of something timeless, quietly held by the people who’ve lived here for generations.

WHAT WILL WE SEE HERE?

In Samburu, the wildlife is as unique as the landscape. You’ll spot the striking Grevy’s zebra with its narrower, sharper stripes, and the elegant reticulated giraffe, its coat a work of geometric art. The gerenuk, a long-necked antelope, can often be seen standing on its hind legs to reach branches. Look closer and you might catch a Somali ostrich strutting across the dusty plains. Samburu is also home to a herd of nearly 900 elephants, their massive presence a constant reminder of the wild scale of this place. As you travel through the reserve, you’ll see predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs in their element. This is one of the best places in Kenya to spot a leopard, with the elusive cats often found lounging in trees or stalking the open plains. Wild dog sightings aren’t uncommon either. And if you look to the skies, over 450 bird species fill the air, making every moment feel alive with nature’s pulse.
